The Russian registry announced that the amount of registered .РФ domain names has just passed the milestone of 900.000 registrations. This new extension was introduced 11 months ago and is a Cyrillic representation of .ru. The “original” Latin-written version “.ru” still has almost 4 times as many domain names registered under it, but that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise as this TLD was already introduced almost two decades ago. The .fr-registry (AFNIC) announced that, from December 6th onwards, the rules for registering a .fr domain name will be relaxed. At this point in time, you are required to either live in France or have a French Trade Mark before you can register a .fr domain name. With the new rules, anyone within the European Union will be allowed to register a .fr domain name.
The .eu-registry has announced that they will be releasing almost 9.000 .eu domain names which where originally registered in bath faith during the .eu launch in 2006. A large amount of .eu domain names where originally registered in 2006 by domain name warehousers and cybersquatters. While the registry had rules in place that for example forbid direct .eu-registrars to warehouse domain names themselves, it was soon clear that these rules where easy to break. For example by setting up two entities, one that got accredited as .eu-registry and an other one that would be the warehousing client.
Today the release of the .xxx domain finally begins. The release will start with a sunrise which will end on October 28th 2011. The sunrise consists out of 3 simultaneous phases.
