Learned the hard way: .co won’t replace .com
At the start of this year, the American online retailer Overstock cut a deal with the .co-registry to get hold of the domain name o.co. They were allowed to register this fancy domain name in return of running an expensive promotion campaign for their new brand o.co, which was supposed to also give the .co-extension more credibility. .wales or .cymru coming up?
According to a study produced by LE Wales in order of Nominet (.co.uk-registry) under Welsh companies 59% of the people who were questioned mean the region needs an own domain name extension. 40% also thinks that this own extension would help them to promote their business within Wales.

Nominet (the .co.uk registry) announced that as of May 1st 2012 it 1 to 10 year registrations will become possible for the .co.uk domain.

ICM postpones sunrise auction
ICM (the .xxx-registry) has announced they’ll postpone the auction for sunrise applications until December. Reason for this is the amount of applications which were filed during the sunrise, approximately 80.000, and the fact the registry needs more time to process all those applications.

CoDNS (the .co.no-registry) has decided to sue Norid (.no-registry). The reason for this is the continuing dispute between them concerning the .co.no extension.

Verisign asks ICANN to approve ‘Anti Abuse Policy’
Verisign, the registry which is responsible for the management of .com, .net and .name names has asked ICANN to approve an ‘Anti Abuse Domain Use Policy’. This way Verisign would like to get the possibility to interfere when they notice a .com, .net or .name domain name is used registered in bad faith.

Now or never for TM Clearinghouses
ICANN is looking for a exclusive provider for a Trade Mark Clearinghouse service. This provider would basically retain a database of valid trade marks. Providers of new TLD’s which will launch in the coming years, will be required to offer a sunrise period of at least 30 days in which only holders of a valid Trade Mark can claim their domain name. Verification of the validity of the trade mark, will need to be done via the Trade Mark Clearinghouse that ICANN is now scouting.
